*1887 Liosna / Belarus - †1985 Saint-Paul-de-Vence / France
Marc Chagall was a French artist born in Belarus and an early representative of modernism. His work anticipated the dreamlike visual language of surrealism with fantastic, narrative paintings. Although Chagall was a contemporary of the Russian Constructivists, he developed in a different direction with a poetic, formless and very personal visual language. In the 1920s, after a stopover in Berlin, Chagall moved to Paris and became friends with members of the French avant-garde, including Robert Delaunay and Fernand Léger. In addition to his paintings, Chagall was also known as a stained glass artist for his colourful church windows.
