*1885 Hradysk / Ukrainia - †1979 Paris / France
Sonia Delaunay played a crucial role in the development of abstract art in the early 20th century through her innovative explorations of colour and form. She drew inspiration from quilt patterns and incorporated the stylistic concerns of Cubism, Fauvism, and Futurism into her bright, geometric paintings and prints. Delaunay referred to her style as 'Orphism' or 'Simultaneism' and focused on exploring the possibilities of colour combinations. In 1964, Delaunay was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre. Her work has since been exhibited at other prestigious institutions, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Delaunay was also involved in fashion, interior design, graphics, collage, bookmaking, and textiles, blurring the boundaries between these disciplines and fine art.
