Maróti János

*1916 Debrecen / Hungary - †1987 Budapest / Hungary

Between 1949 and 1952, he studied at schools for freelance artists under Tibor Gallo, Geza Csorba and Barna Megyeri. In 1956 he was accepted into the Hungarian Artists' Association. Maroti, whose best creative period was in the 1960s and 1970s. Maroti was concerned with clear sculptural relationships and analysed spatial relationships with a rational approach, which ultimately led him to sculptural abstraction. For a long time, his art was withheld from the public by only allowing him to take part in group exhibitions. It was not until the mid-1970s that renowned art historians such as Lajos Nemeth, Gyla Kovacs and Katalin Kürti correctly assessed Maroti's work and recognised its significance for Hungarian sculpture. As a result, two museum exhibitions in Hungary were dedicated to him at the end of the 1970s. Today, most of his metal sculptures can be found in the National Gallery in Budapest and other Hungarian museums. His 80th birthday was celebrated in Budapest in 1996 and a foundation bearing his name was set up to mark the occasion.
