Description
When Modigliani created the “Cariatide”, he was probably still influenced by Pablo Picasso and his “Demoiselles d’Avignon”. However, his drawing draws its power from the clear line, which is further emphasised here by the outline hatching. In Modigliani’s work, the line thus acquires a sensuality which, in conjunction with the compact forms of the kneeling nude, conveys a subtle eroticism.
Modigliani met Leopold Zborowski and his wife Hanka in 1916. Now friends, Zborowski replaced Paul Guillaume as art dealer in 1917. Zborowski sacrificially supported the artist, for example by providing him with a studio and contributing to his daily living expenses.
