Description

During her stay in Zurich in 1915, Gabriele Münter created a series of works on May cardboard, which she entitled “Abstract Studies”. “Abstract Study No. 4” possibly belongs to the group of nine works that Herwarth Waiden from the gallery “Der Sturm” in Berlin sent to Stockholm for exhibition in 1915. Gabriele Münter began to paint abstract pictures in 1912. According to Johannes Eichner, these abstract works were based on representational motifs, often impressions of landscapes. The Zurich series, including the present work, is based on the interior of a café, presumably the Cafe Odeon, where Jawlensky also frequented.
