Modigliani Amedeo

*1884 Livorno / Italia - †1985 Paris / France

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was an Italian illustrator, painter and sculptor. Today he is best known for his nude paintings, which in his days were considered scandalous and only later gained acceptance. Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied the art of Antiquity and Renaissance, until he moved to Paris in 1906. There he came in contact with important artists such as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. Modigliani's oeuvre mainly comprises paintings and drawings. From 1909 to 1914, however, he mainly devoted himself to sculpture. The main theme is the human figure, both in paintings and sculptures. There are also a few pictures with landscape motifs. In his works Modigliani often referred to the Renaissance, but also incorporated other elements such as African art, which was popular at that time. On the other hand, he cannot be categorised under any of the contemporary styles. During his lifetime, Amedeo Modigliani had little success with his art. After his death he achieved greater popularity and his artworks gained high prices.
